Bond Falls

We arrived at Hiawatha Trailer Resort in Woodruff, Wisconsin, July 9th.  The towns of Woodruff and Minocqua are right next to each other.  This area is known as the “Northwoods” of Wisconsin.

After exploring the towns a little and getting “settled in” (aka: setting up camp, cleaning “house,” doing laundry, and buying groceries – yeah, you still have to do those things; it’s not All a vacation!) we decided to take a day trip to a place Jack heard about from someone at the campground – Bond Falls.

It was about an hour and a half drive and located just outside of the town of Paulding in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Bond Falls is a waterfall located on the middle branch of Ontonagon River.  The total drop of the falls is about 50 feet.  We parked at the top of the falls (we were told to park there because it was free as opposed to the park at the bottom of the falls) and followed a trail down to the falls.  There is a walkway across the river just below the base of the falls that offers some fantastic views of the falls.

As we walked down the trail we saw several small falls.

It was truly a moment where we just stood in awe at God’s glorious creation!

Here is a short video I took standing at the top of Bond Falls.

If you ever visit Bond Falls, be SURE to take AND use your bug spray – the mosquitos and flies are pretty bad.  My husband hardly ever gets bit, but I am not so fortunate.  I was glad I had sprayed.  Oh!  And one more thing:  the trail DOWN to the falls is well defined and easy; it’s the walk back up that is somewhat challenging (and that’s putting it nicely!).

So, for now ….. “On the Road Again!”

Door Peninsula – Part 3

Our last day in Door County was Thursday, July 6th.  We wanted to see a few more places before we headed back to the RV at Lake Dubay Shores Campground.  On the list of things to see was:  Whitefish Bay and Whitefish Dunes State Park, Bailey’s Harbor, and Peninsula State Park.

Whitefish Bay was on the east side of Door Peninsula and a little north of our hotel at Sturgeon Bay.  It didn’t take us very long to get there.  Whitefish Dunes State Park was lovely and we had a perfect day to walk around the park enjoying the views.

These people were getting ready for a kayak outing.

Next we drove north along the east coast of the peninsula to Bailey’s Harbor.  The harbor was quiet and beautiful.  We took a “side” road around the edge of the harbor thinking we would get a glimpse of Old Bailey’s Harbor “Bird Cage” Lighthouse or Bailey’s Harbor Range Lights Lighthouse.  After searching for the lighthouses for quite a while, we decided we needed to move on to our next stop.  We never did find the lighthouses.  😞

Peninsula State Park is on the west side of the Peninsula.  We thought this state park was by far the best one on the peninsula that we visited (to be fair, however, we did not go to Newport State Park on the east side of the northern tip of the peninsula because we just ran out of time).

When you enter Peninsula State Park, be sure to get a map of the park at the entrance.  There are numerous places of interest where you will want to stop.  Be sure to NOT miss Eagle Panorama, Nicolet Beach, and Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.  There are many scenic spots to pull over and relax while you enjoy the fantastic views.

That is Horseshoe Island, however, from our view point you couldn’t tell it was in the shape of a horseshoe.

Our next stop:  LUNCH!  We found that the harbor towns on Door Peninsula were full of tourists around July 4th.  Every time we wanted to eat at one of the harbor towns restaurants with a “view,” finding a place to park was a challenge (second only to finding a place with an outdoor eating section because we had our dog with us).  We got lucky in Egg Harbor and found parking and a restaurant that allowed dogs in their outdoor section.  We had to wait for a table for a while, but we had a delicious lunch at Shipwrecked Brew Pub.

After lunch we headed home to the RV.  We had a wonderful three days on Door Peninsula.  If you get a chance to visit here, you won’t regret it!

So, for now ….. “On the Road Again!”
