Tower of the Americas, San Antonio

The Tower of the Americas is a 750-foot observation tower/restaurant located in the HemisFair district on the southeastern portion of downtown San Antonio, TX. The tower was designed by San Antonio architect O’Neil Ford. It was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World’s Fair, HemisFair ’68.

The name of the tower was the result of a Name the Tower Contest. There were 68 people that submitted the name that the tower is known by today. Tower of the Americas was the tallest tower in the United States from 1968 to 1996 when the Las Vegas Stratosphere Tower was completed.

The Tower is located in the middle of the former HemisFair ’68 site and has an observation deck that is accessible by an elevator going up along the outside of the building for a fee.

There is also a lounge and revolving restaurant at the top of the Tower that provides panoramic views of the city. The observation deck level also has panoramic views of San Antonio along with a snack bar and several “party” rooms that I’m sure can be rented for small group events.

You can see the elevator going up to the top. It is about halfway up the side of the tower.

There is a gift shop, snack bar, and a 4D movie theater on the ground level. The grounds surrounding the Tower of the Americas are beautiful. I’m not sure if they are part of the original structures for HemisFair ’68 or not. Here are some photos.

If you are ever in San Antonio, you won’t want to miss seeing the view at the top of the Tower of the Americas.

So, for now ….. “On the Road Again!”
