Market Square, the largest Mexican market in the United States, is a three-block outdoor plaza lined with shops, and restaurants in downtown San Antonio. The “El Mercado” (means The Market) section has 32 specialty shops and the “Farmer’s Market Plaza” section has 80.
The “El Mercado” building was built as a WPA project (Works Progress Administration) in 1938-1939. The locals commonly called it the “Farmer’s Market”, as farmer’s sold their produce straight from their trucks inside the open air building.
Be sure to plan your visit around a time when you know you will be hungry. Mia Tierra Cafe & Bakery and La Margarita Mexican Restaurant & Oyster Bar are the main eateries in the area along with several snack and speciality food shops. We ate at Mia Tierra. The food was great, the service was exemplary, and the decor was phenomenal. Here are a few pics of the decor.
Mia Tierra is also known for their bakery. A neighbor at the RV park where we were staying told to be sure to NOT miss Mia Tierra’s bakery and their pecan pralines. OMGosh! Those pralines were heavenly. Here is the bakery.
My only regret is that we didn’t go back to that bakery and buy some more pralines before we left the San Antonio area! 🤦♀️
