Porcupine Mountains in Michigan Upper Peninsula

We got up early on Tuesday, July 28, to drive to the Porcupine Mountains which are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and on the shores of Lake Superior.  These mountains were fairly close to our campground – only about an hour and forty-five minute drive.  It was a beautiful day for a drive and a hike to the summit to catch another beautiful view of the forests and lake.

As you can see by the sign, it is a wilderness state park.  Believe me, as you drive through it, you really feel like you are in the wilderness.  Don’t get me wrong.  It was peaceful along with gorgeous, and you never know what might be around the next curve.

First stop was at Summit Peak Scenic Area.  We once again hiked to the top of Summit Peak and enjoyed another one of God’s beautiful creations.

There is the tower. If you know me, you know that I’m afraid of heights. This tower wasn’t too bad to climb, though.  However, whenever I’m in high places like this I am still VERY cautious!

After climbing to the top, on the way down, I saw this rock and thought I might as well “conquer” it as well.

Next, we drove through more of the park to get around to the east side.  There were a couple of campgrounds over there.  What we really wanted to see was the view at Lake of the Clouds from the escarpment (a long, steep slope, especially one at the edge of a plateau or separating areas of land at different heights) that runs parallel to Lake Superior in this area.  ANOTHER overlook filled with gorgeous views!

We drove along Lake Superior for a little while before heading back home.  I just can’t get enough of this beautiful lake!
